Directives regarding COVID-19

The Courts of the Northwest Territories and Court Services are issuing Directives to address the best response during the COVID-19 health emergency. Directives will evolve to meet these needs as required. Please review these regularly as the most current information will always be posted at this link.

Civil Claims

The Territorial Court hears civil claims using a simplified procedure which allows people to more easily represent themselves.

The Territorial Court hears all claims under $35,000; except matters which bring into question the title of land; bring into question an inheritance; involve malicious prosecution, false imprisonment, defamation, criminal conversation, false promise of marriage; or actions against a justice of the peace for something done during the course of his or her duties, which are matters only the Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories may deal with.

All civil claims are subject to a mandatory mediation session with a judge. Information on judicial mediation for civil claims can be found here.

The Civil Claims Rules are in force as of January 1st, 2017. They can be found here.

Civil Claims forms can be found here.

Please note that some fees associated with civil claims have changed and are specified in the Court Services Fees Regulations.
