The Office of the Clerk is mandated by legislation. It includes the Registrar of the Court of Appeal, Clerk of the Supreme Court and Clerk of the Territorial Court. The Office is mandated by legislation. The Clerk and Officers are appointed by the Commissioner of the Northwest Territories as deemed necessary for the administration of justice and the dispatch of business of any court. The Clerk of the Territorial Court is also the Clerk of the Youth Justice Court. No clerk while holding office shall practice as a barrister or solicitor.

The duties of the Office of the Clerk include:
  • receiving complaints;
  • receiving and filing papers;
  • issuing statements of claim, warrants, precepts, or writs of execution;
  • entering judgments and recording all judgments pronounced;
  • keeping account of all fines and fees, both paid and received by the Court; and
  • attending all trials before a judge, unless his/her attendance is dispensed with by the judge.
By issue of their appointment, officers of the court are Commissioners of Oaths and have the power to administer oaths, and certify copies. The Court Registry office will do the above tasks for a fee. Court officers will also assist in case file searches for a fee. (please note: public access is denied to all Child Welfare matters.)

The Office of the Clerk of the Supreme Court is located in Yellowknife, NT. All Supreme Court matters, such as those dealing with estates, divorce, certain criminal, and civil claims over $10,000 must be filed in Yellowknife.

The Office of the Clerk of the Territorial Court is located in Yellowknife, with satellite registry offices in Hay River, and Inuvik, NT. Territorial Court matters, such as those dealing with small claims under $10,000, and certain criminal matters may be filed in any of these judicial centers.
